The 7 tech basics every small business actually needs

You don't need an IT department — you need a few things set up right. A plain-English starter kit for any shop, restaurant, salon or service business.

Most small-business owners we meet aren't 'techy,' and they shouldn't have to be. You run a car wash, a café, a salon, a boutique. But a handful of tech basics, set up properly once, quietly save you hours every week and protect you from the bad days. Here's the short list — no jargon.

1. A way to take payments you trust

Cash is fine, but most customers reach for a card or phone. A modern point-of-sale (POS) lets you take chip, tap and cash, prints or texts a receipt, and — importantly — the money lands in your bank, usually the next day. If your 'system' is a card reader that doesn't talk to your sales records, you're doing double work.

2. A professional email address

A @gmail address is fine to start, but yourname@yourbusiness.com builds trust and keeps your business mail separate from your personal life. It also means that if an employee leaves, you still own the inbox.

3. Reliable Wi-Fi — with a guest network

Split your Wi-Fi in two: one private network for your POS, computers and cameras, and a separate guest network for customers. If a guest's phone is infected, it can't reach your business devices. It's a five-minute change that closes a real door.

4. Backups you never think about

Photos, customer lists, invoices, your website — assume the device holding them will fail, because eventually one will. Automatic cloud backups mean a stolen laptop or a dead phone is an annoyance, not a catastrophe.

5. A simple website people can find

It doesn't need to be fancy. It needs your hours, your address, your phone, and a way to book or contact you — and it needs to work on a phone, because that's where almost everyone will see it.

6. A way to keep customers coming back

Getting a new customer costs far more than keeping one. A basic loyalty program, the odd 'we miss you' text, and a nudge for a review turn one-time visits into regulars. Most POS systems can do this for you automatically.

7. Someone to call when it breaks

The single biggest difference between businesses that lose a day to a tech problem and ones that don't is having a number to call. You don't need a full-time IT person — you need a partner who already knows your setup.

You didn't start your business to become an IT expert. The goal is simple: set the basics up once, correctly, then get back to your customers.

That's the whole idea behind Nubevo — one friendly team that handles all of this for one monthly price, so you can stop juggling vendors and passwords and get on with the work you actually love.
