The 20-minute security checklist for small businesses

You don't need to be a hacker's target to get hit — most attacks are automatic. Here's a plain-English checklist any owner can finish in an afternoon.

A common myth: 'we're too small to be a target.' The truth is most attacks aren't targeted at all — they're automated, sweeping the internet for easy doors left unlocked. The good news is that closing those doors is quick and cheap. Here's the short list.

Turn on two-step login everywhere that matters

Email, banking, your POS, your website. Two-step login (a code from your phone on top of your password) stops the overwhelming majority of account break-ins, even if your password leaks. It's the single highest-value thing on this list.

Use a password manager

Reusing one password everywhere means one leak unlocks your whole life. A password manager makes every login unique and remembers them for you — you only memorize one.

Split your Wi-Fi

Customers and guests on one network; your POS, computers and cameras on another. Most routers can do this in a couple of taps.

Keep things updated

Those update prompts you keep dismissing usually fix security holes. Turn on automatic updates for your phones, computers and POS so it happens without you.

Back up, and test it

Ransomware locks your files and demands payment. A recent, automatic backup turns that from a disaster into a shrug. Once a year, actually try restoring a file so you know it works.

Know who to call

Decide today who you'll phone if something looks wrong — a suspicious email, a locked screen, a charge you don't recognize. Panic is expensive; a plan is free.

Security for a small business isn't about being bulletproof. It's about not being the easy target — and that's a low bar you can clear in an afternoon.

If you'd rather not think about any of this, that's fair — it's exactly what a managed partner is for. We set these basics up, keep them current, and are the number you call when something looks off.
